How many businesses or groups have you become a “fan” of on facebook? Have you voted on things or entered contests? Do you read updates from your most frequented businesses, your favorite restaurants or celebrities you’re secretly stalking (ok not really) ? Check out this video on YouTube-Socialnomics.
The original posting had almost 2 million views, and this update has already had over 208,000 hits since its posting on May 5th! The clip is based on the book Socialnomicsby Eric Qualman. The facts in here are kind of unbelievable! Like, social media is the #1 activity on the web (that’s a lot of other activities to beat out!) and if facebook were a country, it would be the 3rd largest, beaten out only by China and India (yes, larger than the US!). To put it in a modern context, ipods took 3 years to reach 50 million users, while facebook reached over 200 million in less than ONE year! And the largest growing facebook population is females, age 55-65? So I’m not the only one persuading my mom to join…
The power of social media is phenomenal, and the potential it has to grow anything, whether it’s a business, a relationship or a reputation, is getting exponentially larger as you read this. But the possiblity of growth is countered by the power of a negative comment or a bad review. I will admit, I’m on my iphone all the time checking facebook updates…So, if I’m heading out to dinner and my friend updates (or tweets) from my favorite restaurant, that she’s been waiting an hour for a table, or even that they’re out of grouper tonight, I’m heading somewhere else – done!
Socialnomics stresses that “social media isn’t a fad, it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate”. Think about how you spend YOUR day, what your kids are talking about, and now even how your parents find out what you’ve been up to-it’s true! What a cool way to share and make the world a smaller place! Are you ready?
